I can't afford a good Macro lens right now, so I spent $20 on a 2x macro filter for my kit lens:

Shot this with my EF-S 18-55mm kit lens and a 2x macro filter.

You should have got some extension tubes instead.

Like the shot. Some cheap extension tubes are an alternative, but the close-up filter will work too.

Extension tubes with AF support are more expensive than the filter. But I will add that to my list, thanks!

I got the ones without AF before I had a macro lens, they're really cheap and no loss of image quality. Learn to focus by moving the camera bacwards and forwards.

You could always buy an old EF 35-80 and break out the front element. I hacked mine and am pretty happy with the results.
