Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
good day and obviously im new in photography.
i am a fan and i wanna try it out myself.

i have a d40 and using a kit lens of 18-55mm lens.

now my problem is this:
I am trying a portrait photography using my white painted wall and a flourescent white spot lamp... i am using the manual mode but it doesnt seem to adjust to the light.

is the light poor or is the light too white???
i have tried setting up the ISO, apperture, shutterspeed, exp compensation and flash but the clicker wont allow me to click the shutter.
i just press it and nothing happens, only the screen goes off.

can you guess what the problem is???

thanks in advance.

without seeing a failed image in it impossible for us to speculate as to your problem.

Post up a good example of the problems you are having and we might be able to point you in a better direction.

Welcome to the forum. Please tell us more about your settings so we can help, what are they?

I'm fairly new to this myself, however, I know that if my shutter fails to fire it's because my camera has NOT focused. This has been due to low light. When I increased the light on the subject it helped or you can switch to manual focus.

Are you getting focus confirmation? If you aren't, many cameras won't take the pic, if the lens is set to auto focus.

i do not have a failed image cause my camera doesnt let me shoot.
whenever i press the clicker, it just auto focuses and turns the lcd screen off.

on manual mode, my settings are...
ISO - i tried 200, 800 and HI
WHITE BALANCE - Auto
EXP COMP - tried from the middle to the lowest
APPERTURE - biggest opening and middle opening
SHUTTER SPEED - tries fastest to lowest
FLASH -tried everything

the only problem is, whenever i change those settings and mix them all, the clicker wont allow me to take pictures.
but when i point the camera into a darker room, it allows me to press the clicker and take photos.

what seems to be the problem?

Ok, let me back up. You will find in photography that for us or even yourself to analyze an issue we need specifics ie. iso was set at 800, shutter at 1/250 at f5.6 for each attempt. When it shoots in a darker room what are the exact settings vs. those shot at the white wall. Did flash fire or not? Did it auto focus? What does it do in auto mode? I would read your manual front to back and try again.

It sounds like you don't know enough about your camera or photography to be attempting to use manual mode. ;)

You're not having much success describing your issue in an accurate way either. When you say clicker, are you referring to the shutter release butto?.

Have you read the camera's users manual? What metering mode and focusing mode are you using?

The fact you can't seem to find the keyboard's shift key when you type is also not encouraging, since doing photography is about paying close attention to details.

honestly, after mixing all those settings, i cant exactly tell what settings i used in one attempt that is why i cant say what settings i used. the breakdown of settings i gave above was the adjustments i used and combined all of em.

as for a newbie, i do not know the terms on the camera so pardon me and i apologize if i confuse you guys.

VTF - i will try to do a photoshoot again and write down exactly the settings i used to be more specific. but i wanna know what usually causes problems when shutter dont allow to shoot?

thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it.

The only time I know it refuses to shoot is when it cannot lock onto a subject and focus. Try manual focus on your lens and see if that helps.

Christ almighty.

Someone needs to ask, I guess: the 'clicker', as you call it, can be pressed halfway down which causes the LCD screen to go dark. A bunch of neat green numbers are then displayed in the viewfinder. Pressing the button all the way down then results in a picture.

thanks ill try adjusting manual on the lens.
but would the camera also not allow to shoot if it detects low light or bright light?

Sounds to me like you're just guessing at "settings".

If you are truly trying to use your flash, it likely will not shoot unless you are set to the flash sync speed, or, as said, you may have a lens in AutoFocus mode, and it is unable to achieve focus in the low light....

Why not try everything in Program Mode and see what happens.........:D

Just press buttons and smash things.

Works for me.

LarryD - thanks. i always disable the flash cause it's not the kind of photo i wanted. so i guess it cant focus in autofocus mode. i will try again and update you guys.

but, it wont allow to take pictures if there's no subject? i mean if only plain white background is infront of the camera, it wont allow the shutter to be pressed?
