PLEASE HELP ME!!! ABOUT MY D40!!!

That's because the auto focus can't get a lock onto anything - the AF works by detecting differences in contrast within the scene - if there are no differences (eg the white sheet) or the lighting is poor and there is little difference then the AF might not be able to get a lock.
Your only hope then is to shoot in manual focusing mode where you focus the lens yourself.

I also strongly recommend that you re-read your camera manual and also try reading Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. That along with experimentation should start to help give you an idea of how to control the various settings and what they each influence.

Just press buttons and smash things.

Works for me.

You forgot "spin random dials".

On the D40, if memory serves me correctly, you can hold down both buttons with the green dot- this reset all settings to factory specs. This might be a great place for the OP to start; square one.

I also hate to say it, but you might want to read over Ken Rockwells guide to the D40. I am sure it will come up in google.
