I've recently been searching for a suitable tripod, as the current piece of tat that I've been using is seriously flimsy. I'm after something that I will be able to travel around with (specifically to fit in the tripod holder of the Lowepro Flipside 300 backpack), so size and weight need to be kept as low as possible.

Having said that, I will be requiring something that can provide adequate support for a D7000/D700 aswell as a 70-200 f2.8 lens and a suitable head to match.

I have been looking at the Manfrotto range (MK293 and the 190CX3), but I'm very unsure of what head to go for. Again, it must be functional but not massive as the Flipside 300 is not a huge bag. I don't mind the tripod extending someway above the top of the bag as I can secure it with bungee cord, just so long as it's within reason.

You guys are welcome to throw any advice my way.

Cheers.

You're talking about a support device that will hold potentially up to $4000 worth of equipment, and the BAG is the deciding factor????? SHAKE YOUR HEAD!!!!!

I agree with the Manfrotto 190 series legs; and if the budget runs to CF, that will reduce weight. You could also go for the four-section legs which compact more, but cost you some rigidity. As for a head, any good ball head will do, just make sure that it meets the minimum weight requirement and has a separate friction control and panning base. The Manfrotto 054 is a good unit.

Before you run out and buy it however, check your local Craig's List and other used gear/swap boards. Tripods can often be had for a great deal second-hand!

Thanks for the advice, looks like I'll probably go for that head and the 190.

I only mentioned the bag, as there is no point in me getting something that I cannot reasonably carry around with my existing equipment.

Well, ya know funny thing you ask about tripods... I know you're in the UK, so I am not sure about an international order, but THIS VERY Sunday morning, I ordered an on-sale Adorama carbon fibre tripod from the Adorama web site....and later filled out my second Adsense survey, and got myself a second round of four magzines for a full year, for only $2 processing. handling fee per magazine per year. I filled out a prior survey a few months abck and also got my four magazine subscriptions and they began arriving VERY soon after my first Adorama order! I bought this model because it is their only 3-section leg model: MOST of their carbon fibre models are 4-section models: I detest 4-section legs!!! Just three more leg locks to dick around with...I prefer 2- or 3-section legs...I bought this for hikes and day trips where its 2.7 pound weight is THE biggest factor...

I ordered their $99 model....on-sale down from $139 regular price...FREE shipping to me too! lemme paste this in...

Flashpoint F-1127 Version II Carbon Fiber Tripod, 3 Section Leg Set, Supports 18.7 lbs.,(Maximum Height 58.4in Closed to 24")(SKU FPTPF1127N)

I did not receive my tripod yet but we have similar equipment and I was advised that it would be good for me. Manfrotto 055XPROB with Manfrotto 496RC Quick release ballhead for 250$ on BHphoto

I have a Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 (carbon fiber) with the 054-Q2 head and it holds my D7000 with a Sigma 150-500 just fine. Works great for me and I'm quite happy with it.
