What's new

Please tell me what you think of my images the good and the bad.

They are just OK pictures of a baby - a subject that has been shot bazillions of times and so it takes something special to stand out.

Framing is not great and the angles don't do the baby justice.
BW conversions make everything looks grey.

The mother will love them but these could be much better.

i never understood the giant gaudy bows on babies heads, i find them rather ugly

Well thanks for the feedback...a bit harsh but it is still feedback. These were images from my first two shoots I've ever done so for my first shoot I thought they were pretty good. Do you have any tips for better black and white conversion?

how do you do your conversions?

They are all underexposed, angles and cropping is not good

I just used the black and white effect in iphoto. I don't have Photoshop yet but I do have Gimp and I'm just learning how to use it.

Learning to do good conversions is an art like anything else.
You can't depend on software to know what colors are important or not.
Learn Gimp (get GimpShop, a graphical front end)

Very lovely shots, especially #1,4,5. Could be improved with proper crop following the rules of third.

Purely technical and objective C&C:

1. Insufficient depth of field, lateral bisection of limbs is never a good plan, nor cropping the head so as to cut off part of an eye.

2. Insufficient depth of field; bad shooting position (you're reflected in teh sujbect's eyes). Lack of separation between hair and background.

3. Cropping comments as per #1, monochrome conversion is overly mid-tone rich.

4. Again lacking depth of field, conversion as per #3.

5. Awkward angle, conversion as per #3.

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

Thank you...I think you are the only one that said anything nice....I definitely know there is a lot of room for improvement. Like I mentioned above these were pictures from my first two shoots and I was so nervous about moving the baby around I just shot her how I could get her. But I will definitely work on using the rule of thirds and do some research on cropping. Yesterday I was so discouraged and was ready to give up on photography but I remembered I'm just starting out and that I actually do have people that are are interested in working with me...so I will just strive to be better. What tips can you give me on cropping?

Don't expect positive comments from some of the other photographers here. They are going to tell you like they see it and that is what you will need to get better. Use everything they tell you and don't take it like they are talking about you, they are talking about your photos. You will see yourself getting better if you can take what that say with a grain of salt, remember it and try again. You'll get it.

I think #1 looks great and not bad for your first shoot, but I am a beginner as well, so…………..

I prefer the colored versions on your photostream. The above b&w don't do the pictures justice. #2 is oof. The best is #1.
I would look for a different prop other than the towels. Look up two very good baby photographers on here Aayria and Ababysean. You might get some ideas from their images.

Keep working on it. Don;t get frustrated, it's part of the learning curve.

You are welcome, IIjones. :)
Did you ever hear the three rules of a good picture from NYIP (New York Institute of Photography)?
1. Subject or theme: the main object or concept you want to tell with your picture
2. Attention: the way your draw attention of the viewers onto the main object or concept
3. Simple: keep your picture as simple as possible

For instance, the subject of #1 shot should be the cute sleeping face of the baby. Basically your picture tell the subject well. Let's see the rule of attention. Is there any object in the image that could draw attention away from the baby face? I believe you got it. :) Then let's consider the rule of simplifying. You may try to crop out some space on left and bottom properly. You done!

I can see your talent in the images. I can feel something more stronger then photo skill in you: your passion with true love. Wish you keep moving on and never give up! :)
