What portrait lens could I buy for the Nikon D40? I have the kit lens and it does a fairly good, but I would like a more specific lens for portraits.
Thanks in advance for your help.

anything around 50-80 would be ideal...
or a 70-200 works quite well for portraits...because you can always use a longer lens, if you move back.

I just got the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and it seems like it will make a great portrait/long distance lens:) It also focuses with the D40 since it has the HSM motor.

I am looking at a Sigma 50-150 HSM it also is a f/2.8 lens. You don't have to back up so much as with the 70-200 helpful in smaller rooms. Might be worth talking a look at.

Portrature lenses can be anything from 20 to 200, dependng on how and where you shoot.

I did a whole series of protraits for a friend's parent's 50th a short while ago, using nothing more than the 18-50 Sigma . I had excelent results. However I can see the need for 50-200 range in portraits just as easily.

It depends on MANY factors!

Get a 50mm f1.8 and try using available light.
