On a black background : https://plus.google.com/photos/114391137842140117468/albums/5780864930146914945/5976210397910949842

Would have loved to see this without any spillage on the BG and with a rim light on the hat.

I think it's a very well-done lighting scheme, good pose, and a good actor/subject. The mustache is perfect! His age and appearance are perfect!

@braineack : there is no spillage on the background, it is lighted on purpose, and there is a rim light, but a soft one.
@derrel : it is a bit old style lighting, with harsh main light from a snoot, like in the old movies. This probably contributes to the mood and the style, I guess.

gotcha, (I do see the rim) just would be curious to see this as a more "film noir" style.

A bit too healthy looking for my taste.

Bring up black point.
yellow-brown fill layer at 25%
film grain at 500/pixel
and burning edges

Looks like a rembrandt.

Nice studio image--I like the mood of the lighting and very much like the styling of his character.

Putting on my PPA judging hat I can't resist adding that a boost the the "hair light" to really "rim" the hat would really make this POP !!

One last portrait tip: Just before I click the shutter I always check my subject's EYES--I would have directed him to shift his eye direction back towards me just enough so I could see some white on the other side of each eye.

Guys, I am doing photography, not an illustrative work for book covers. lol. But the rendering is good, congrats, and I appreciate these other visions. It's always interesting.

@JerryVenz : (what is PPA ?) About the rim light, hmmm, I don't know. I did not want distraction but just enough light for getting minimum details. I wanted the focus to be on the face.

What's the point to make a painting from it ? I still don't get it.
