It just shows that being a footballer is not always about fame, glory, hordes of reporters and crowds of fans. This guy's dream is to play in some remote African football academy, and apparently nobody gives a s**t. .. And I always liked red chairs

Not a problem. I worked in the industry and know how every footballer's word ( even if it is utter rubbish most of the time) is recorded, broadcasted, sold, rebroadcasted to huge audiences, and sports rights (especially football) are the most sought after and the most expensive in Europe. That was the first time I saw a footballer talking to this shabby room with empty chairs, and noone was listening.
But that is probably personal due to my work. As you say, your mileage may vary..

Not a problem. I think that's the case; your familiarity with the subject matter allows you a greater understanding than the average viewer (especially those of us that know the same amount about football as we do about particle-matter physics!).

Seems like there are some elements in here that are interesting, but it doesn't seem to quite work for me either.

I think if you'd had caught different words on the screen - something about 'letting people know' or 'spreading the word'...something that indicated more clearly that the purpose of his being on the screen was to speak to people, or that related to his fame. That and the empty chairs would have been a more powerful statement that could even be expanded beyond the football context. It might feel too obvious, but to those not in the industry, too subtle could translate into too little interest.
