Portrait shoot with a friend

Having only been shooting for around three months (most of that time doing more youtube vids than shooting) I was quite pleased with this result . All Natural light and some processing in PS. Comments welcome. Cheers J

Not bad dude, not bad! This has some nice, small, separated elements in it that show her beauty off very well. I think a very slight crop off the right hand side, to eliminate that light-colored open space in the upper right quadrant, and then a bit of a crop off the top, to bring the aspect ratio back to something with balance and add a bit more squareish-ness to the final aspect ratio would make this even better. This **is** an interesting portraiture example; it is not classical, nor is it traditional, but it's the kind of innovative portrait where the whole ends up being greater than the sum of its parts. This manages to be an unconventional, very sexy, very engaging, and very flattering look at her! Well-done!

A couple of thoughts: First and foremost the softness of her eye bothers me. It appears as if the point of focus was on the lip/hair and that this was shot wide open with a relatively fast lens. Shallow DoF is a great compositional tool, but in portraiture, if nothing else, the eyes must be sharp. I might also try cropping out most of her hand; leave just a little bit so that the viewer understands what's going on, but I think most of it can go.

Hi I actually focused on her Left eye as this is what i have learnt watching all those youtube vids, however i did perform a PS eye pop action that i saw dont on a vid to make her eyes slightly brighter, could this have had an effect on the sharpness. It involves a layer then exaggerated colour painting the a Gausian blur on a soft light overlay.

That could be it. Looking carefully at the eye, it seems in fact that the lashes are sharp, but that the iris itself is slightly soft.
