Hi guys..

Here are some of the photos of my second portrait trails with my new 60d, this is my sister in law and the lighting was only from the window no refletors also..

Please advise on what do i need to improve the portrait shoots..

Also, I am trying to learn more about lighting and what do i need to get the professional effects.. are there good books or websites for that ?

Thank you for your support in advance.

Best regards,

AAH

1. I would've bumped up the Apeture to around 1.8 to get her whole face in focus. It kinda fades out around her lips.

2. Back ground with the table isn't cutting it for me.

3. good but missing the top of her head alittle

4. favorite out them all. Just sharpen up the right eye a little. to get it a little bit more in focus with the other..

Not a bad patch of photos

Btw, im jealous of your 60D. :(

Thank you dude, will note that for next trys:) and the 60d is really full satisfaction for me so far .. take care

Decent lighting but did the natural lighting cause you to shoot at 1.4 because the focus on the eyes looks missed on 1-3, not as sharp as I would expect from a 50mm 1/4. They appear soft.
Maybe a hair light on 3.
You might be able to sharpen up her eyes up in post. Overall nice set.

Thank you.. i am still new, so getting the shapest out of the lens is still a bit tricky for me .. i need to get trained to that .. however, i really liked that you guesed it right that it is the 1.4 lens :)

can u advise which methods are better to use for sharper protraits, is it the spot metering or evaluated? i am using autofocus and stopmetering.. i focus in middle on the eye and recompose.. any tips?

To be truthful I spot meter but am not at the level to be expert at which one is better. Each has its own designated time for usage.
As far as your images are concerned, many people (Myself included) that get the 50mm 1/4 or 1/8 will take portraits believing that the wide aperature will solve the problems of the world. What happens in many cases I've seen is that the rooms lighting is poorer than expected so in order to meter we either raise the iso high, slow the shutter to slow motion speed or crank the aperature wide open to compensate (we never think of flash at this point.). When you are at wide open there is such a narrow focus plane that a subject at just a slight angle can have the nose in focus and eyes not, or one eye in focus and the other not. Stop it down to f4-5 and see how much better the focus is, then slowly pull it back down to 2-3.
It cames with trial and error, just practice.

I like them a lot! 1+4 are my favorites by far, but the others are good too.

She looks almost *identical* to one of my friends...I'd swear they were the same person if you were from the States lol but the UAE isn't really close enough to consider it a strong possibility. Uncanny resemblance though!
