Portraits C & C, how am I doing? Having a hard time getting hang of 50mm

I'm not fond of the landscape orientation in #3. Vertical would be better, IMO. Also, I'm not sure if what you're displaying of the boy is ideal. I'd like more shoulders in the frame to see where the head actually sits on the body. The cut off collar isn't pleasing to my eyes, also.

When it comes to portrait lighting, I don't know much, but it seems that you've gotten out the boy's features by having the boy side lit. The boy doesn't stand much out from the background, though. Subject-backgorund contrast isn't very strong.

With most 50 mm prime lenses, sharpest focus is achieved by stopping the lens down at least 2 stops and often even more.

Please post your shooting (EXIF) data if you want C&C.

Flickr sucks because it doesn't include the EXIF data when you post photos here.

LOL gsgary.. I didn't take you to be someone who cared if they got roasted or not! You're always straightforward!!;)

Your right i couldn't give a **** what people think, if i don't like something i say so i'm not one of these that says "Thats a wonderful shot i would hang it" because they will carry on making the same mistakes that doesn't help anyone

Just because you have F1.8 does not mean you have to shoot everything at F1.8 because you only have to be a bit off with focus and the shot is only good for the recycle bin

Agreed and slowly learning this... as far as these images...in your opinion should they be in the recycle bin?

Just turn down the exposure a step and add some fill light and they should be okay.
