Before I quit my job, I had a good friend/coworker ask me if I was interested in attending he and his wife's birth and documenting. The call finally came at 9:48 on a Sunday evening (making me miss the end of the GoT season finale, but worth it!). After stopping to grab a 20oz RedBull, I booked it to the birth center, about 30 miles away, and within 20 minutes of arriving, baby was born!
Mom's first words after birth? "Great ****ing timing, Jess!"
The staff was really amazing too! Yes, I was there to shoot, but having given birth before, I knew to stay the hell out of the way of all the nurses and the midwife. Imagine my surprise when they latch baby on for the first time and Margie, the CNM, says, "Hey, get in here! Get this!" Overall, it was just such a cool experience.
If anyone is interested in birth and wants to view the full set or learn more about the overall experience, please let me know. Taking on birth photography is pretty heavy; talking to others with experience was so helpful for me beforehand. I'm happy to share the gallery on a case-by-case basis, but wanted to respect the intimacy of the event (and the family's privacy) on a public forum.
