Printing Digital Image

Just can't seem to get it right. When I have my Images printed they are either way to bright or way to dark. I realized the my monitor being backlit would contribute to this so I set a Graphics scheme to almost 0 brightness. This way when I want to edit my photos in Lightroom 4 to prepare them for printing, I just set the scheme and boost up the exposer. I recently picked up some prints and the highlights are to over exposed. Any tips and advice. ? Plus Lightroom 4 has a soft proof option. I have all the setting set for the printer that my print shop uses (professional print shop, not cvs) so the colors are just fine, just can't seem to get the exposer right.

Check out the tut on display calibration. Sounds like the gamma for your display needs to be adjusted.
