Professional Photographer Recommendation?

For our final project, we have an empathetic study where we find a black and white photographer's work and try to emulate specific techniques that that photographer employs. The photographer has to be from bandwmag.com

I'm trying to get some recommendations ... a photographic series in particular would be nice. Any suggestions would be nice! I was surfing through the abstract portion (Metaphor/Abstract :: 2011 Portfolio Gallery :: Black & White Magazine Contest Entrant Galleries) but they seem really tough to shoot. How do they even do those?!

Why are you limited to photographers who are published in a certain magazine? That really smacks of "kickback" to me. What specific image(s) are you looking at that seem tough? Pretty much everything on that page seemed fairly straight forward; some had a LOT of post-processing, but the images themselves seem pretty basic.

Well, there's also a list ... it's a list of basically famous black and white photographers OR people from that magazine.

Anything really --- I'm kind of interested in that abstract kind of thing, though.

[ And I won't be able to do any post processing -- just dark room time, if you count that as post processing .. no digital.]

Great magazine - I've been a subscriber for years. I can't think of any names off the top of my hear though. There is some great (and some not so great) work in there.

Is it just me, or has the quality in B&W fallen in the last year...? I have been noticing photos in there that were either low resolution digital (B&W features both digital and film), or very badly resized film scans...

This is getting interesting. Measuring manhood with b+w photos.
I guess if that's the case, you're hung like a mule. Could it be that FX is a mere phallic symbol, in your case?

Easy both are shot with just 1 studio light but you would need a flash meter or you could use continuous lighting
