Profile of X-Country Runners

does anybody have any tips on how i can go about shooting x-country profile shots?

all i have to work with is a d40 and a flash.

someone is writing a profile article of one of the x-country stars in my school.

by profile you mean posed? I would have fun, bump up the shutter speed and catch them in stride. or have some fun with poses at their favorite place to compete. You mentioned it was for school so work some school pride in it. I could see some nice photos with the subjects not looking at the camera. not sure if this was the advice you wanted or not...good luck!
