Nice! I like the scrunched up eyes the best, you got a real intensity going on here. The hard light pushes that button pretty effectively as well, so you have several elements pulling together, with the subject.

Maybe a little more tension in the neck and shoulders, if you re-shoot?

ETA: This might work well in b&w, it has that noir feel to the light.

I dig the light as-is, nice and hard.

If you were going to change it, you could try to simulate some other light. Use a snoot, low down, for headlights? Or use a bare strobe almost overhead for a streetlight feel, or a dialed-down softened strobe low-ish from the side, to suggest a single lamp in a seedy hotel?

The light you have is hard, which is good, but does not particularly suggest a larger scene, to me. It might well, to someone else, though!

cool thanks! this was already shot with a gridded snoot high above and slightly to my right. didn't know if something was missing for my left side? or if it looks good fading into darkness...
i guess the only thing that bothers me is the out of focus bottle... does that matter?

But to me the expression doesn't fit the picture in a way I can't put my finger on.

The face looks a bit contrived in both. Maybe tone that look down a bit.

I'd like to see more light on the bottle, but too much would detract from the face.

^ agreed, hmmm, well with one light its a bit difficult to stage. plus, while I'm running back and forth between the camera and my stool before the shutter opens, -the positions are all slightly different -not to mention, i hate hennessey, so after a few shots, the bad facial expressions can't be avoided. ill try to come up with another option for lighting, but, i did want a "bad mood" to be the overall feel, (bad times for me and my girl )

I like the OOF bottle. Maybe a hair light to get the shape of his head to pop against the background? I also agree with Rotanimod that the expression is a bit contrived. Otherwise, I like it!

You should have used whiskey and not hennessy. Something in a plastic bottle variety.
