Question about GIMP

I have four images I colorized that I want to put together in a rectangular pattern similar to how Warhol has his here,

Anyone know how to do this?

I'm sure there are better ways, but I've done it like this:

Create a new canvas 2x width and 2x height of the size of one of the four images.
Copy and paste each image as a new layer in the new canvas.
Arrange as necessary.
Flatten image.
