A couple of questions for those of you with some experience

*DISCLAIMER* Yes, I know these lenses are basically a gimmick, and I'm aware of their inherent shortcomings. I feel that having one around would be lots of fun to play with, and such.

Will this lens meter on the Nikon D7000 body? I know it can meter AI/S lenses, but being aftermarket I'm not sure if this one will.

Also, for those in the know.... is it worth an extra $40 to get the f/6.3 ($130) over the f/8 ($90) on these knock off reflex lenses?

Thanks

No, this lens will not meter on your body. You will need to use 'Stop-down' metering (Think: Sunny 16 rule), and yes, for that little extra, I would definitely buy the faster of the two.

Please forgive my total ignorance on this one. So the sunny 16 rule states that on a bright sunny day at f/16 you will use the inverse of your ISO. ISO 100, yeilds a 1/100 shutter, ISO 200 yields 1/200 etc.

Using the f/8 lens as a convenient comparison, the f/8 would be 2 stops larger than the f/16 called for in the rule. Does this mean that at ISO 100 I would be using a 1/400 shutter and at ISO 200 1/800 repsectively?

I'm still a noob, and manual metering is a thing of complete mystery to me.

It's about time I learn.

Why buy a nice camera and put a piece of **** on the end of it

Please refer to my disclaimer in the original post.

I have some nice glass. When the pictures matter, I will use it.

I'm thinking that the piece of **** lens could be a large handful of fun..... especially at the disposable.price of.$80

That and a nice 500mm lens is about 8,000 dollars.

Thanks for your concern though. I always appreciate folks looking out for me.:

The sunny 16 rule states that: In bright sun, set your shutter speed to your ISO (or as close as you can), and, in bright sun, use an aperture of f16. This means that if you have a fixed aperture lens (f8) it is going to let in twice the amount of light required, therefore you would either double your shutter-speed or halve your ISO to account for the extra stop of light that this lens will admit.

He can always use it as a door stop when he's had his fun

Inexpensive mirror lenses are not "that bad". They resolve ample line pairs per millimeter with decent technique. Most mirror lenses will not T-stop their stated aperture, so the f/6.3 model is to be preferred over the specified f/8 model.

They aren't that great either. The way I look at it, if you learn how to use it it will yield acceptable, but not spectacular images. Great for places you need to reach out a ways to even get an image (beter something than nothing at all, right?). For example, at Lambeau field when I go to the Packer games (3-4 times a year) a 300mm isn't long enough from my seats (and if it was, only the consumer zoom would be allowed in the stadium.... which would give me equally horse**** pictures at the far end of the barrel), and even if I did have a "real" 400mm or 500mm I wouldn't be allowed in the stadium with it, since it exceeds the maximum allowed length for a camera lens without having a photographer's pass. I can bring this, make some images, and play with them in PP to see what I can get. That in and of itself is worth the $100.

The point of this thing is to get a longer lens that I don't mind kicking around. Yeah, I'm planning on getting some real glass in the 4-500mm range eventually when the bankroll can float it, but even when I do there will be all sorts of places I wouldn't want to take it. If the reflex gets smashed, drowned, frozen, run over, trampled or otherwise mauled I'm out about a hundred bucks. The Nikkor 500mm af-s VR f/4 gets dinged I'm out the price of a new car. (a ****ty car yes, but a car none the less)
