I've seen this more and more recently from the local photographers in my area. I'm not sure how they do it; quite frankly, I don't care because I don't like it, but I do want to know. Is it just overexposed or is there more to it? I really don't care for this style, but I feel that I need to understand it to be more well rounded...

Overexposed, lack of fill, harsh shadows, blown highlights, and a huge boost in saturation.

Pretty much crap all the way around. Looks like a shot taken around noon in Auto with a picture setting of Vivid.

So, it's basically everything one should try to avoid doing when taking a photo? Why is it so common?! Perhaps this is what I really struggle to understand?

SHODDY PHOTO ALERT

Because a lot of people who charge for their work just bought a 'professional' DSLR and think they are Pro's.

Take a look at your local Craigslist...look at how many people are advertising cheap weddings or cheaper portraits.

Basically, it's so common because the marketplace is flooded with morons.

Makes sense! That's kind of what I was thinking, but I wondered if there were more to it. Thanks!

Yeah, there is more to it. Facebook and mobile phones are a huge part of the transition. If a photo goes on facebook that is in focus and not ridiculously noisy, it is automatically a great shot. Photography has been dumbed down for the masses. Now, the majority of people can take pictures pretty much wherever and share them with everybody they know. Most of those pictures are horrible, but people have become so used to seeing them, that they are the new 'norm'. Anytime an image surpasses what they are used to seeing, it's a 'great shot'. Their friends convince them they take 'great pictures' and should start a business.

That's how you end up with photos like you posted. They are better than an I-Phone pic and probably got a lot of compliments on facebook.

That's a little uncalled for don't you think?

Completely uncalled for.

If I've somehow offended you, I'm sorry. I really don't understand your reaction to this. Perhaps you use this 'style'; if that's the case, I'm sorry. I do not find this 'style' visually pleasing at all. It appears that there are others who agree with this, so I'm not sure what justified your response.

the blown out white shirt really hurt my eyes. Could be this crappy monitor but still, WOW. People pay for this stuff?
