Quick PS question

I created a new layer. This is how I did it:
-Layer/New/Layer
Gave it a Name, No Color, Normal Mode, unchecked the 'Group with Previous Layer' and said OK.

-Then I did Image/Adjust/Gradient Map, but the message that I got was
"Could not complete the Gradient Map command because the active layer is empty"

Whats the story here? How do I make changes on a new layer?

Use a gradient map adjustment layer. It's in a menu that you access from the bottom of the layers palette. Much easier.

If you were doing ti the way you did, you would just need to fill the layer in with a color first. White or black would do.

-And, what is the purpose of layering? How do we recollect the history?
