rain cover

Well dang! Those are some expensive covers. I will have to invest in those one day for sure. But for now I just need something for a little rain shower. No hours in the rain...yet

I spent about 4 hours at a huge "Relays" type of track meet back in the D1h days...not hard, heavy rain, just a consistent Oregon drizzle...what Californians might call "a big rain." I carried a couple of small hand towels in my bag, and I wiped the D1h and 300/2.8 AF-S II off pretty frequently.

Near the end of the meet, my Nikon D1h began to malfuntion. I could not touch any of the rear buttons without the camera cycling through EVERY single option on the camera...ALL I COULD DO was SHOOT, in Aperture Priority AUTO. If I reviewed, the camera went thru every image on the card, and would not respond to anything except pulling the battery out, and turning the camera back on. After the heart palpitations stopped, I realized I had missed some events, and had gained about 100 gray hairs while futzing around in a panic as my camera basically shorted out if I did anything except to just SHOOT pictures and NOT touch anything.

It took my D1h about a week of drying-out time for the buttons and controls to come back to normal operation. I had a $3499 camera reduced to basically, a ONE-mode camera after 4 hours in light, typical, Oregon springtime rain. I bought the Aquatech the next week. it fit the D1h, the D2x, and the D3x perfectly. It works with my 300, 200, and my 70-200.

Well that sucks Derrel! I get what you mean and I surely wouldn't be using anything cheap in a downpour. Good(?) news is...Austin is pretty dang dry. We are in constant drought/water restrictions. Rains are few and far between Thanks for all the advice though.

While I've got you here...are any of you guys brave enough to take your dslr on a kayak? I want to so badly but it makes me all kinds of nervous. I think I would be outta my mind to take it

I know, it IS nuts. But gah, so many missed photo opportunities . I guess I'll stick with my iphone.

I have an Olympus point and shoot (my son has it in my avatar) that I put in a waterproof cover when I'm swimming or canoeing (and I'll take it on vacation when I'm snorkelling). I wish I had the reach from the canoe for birds, but I've dropped that damn thing in the lake so many times, I just know my DSLR would be taking a swim. A $120 Olympus won't break my heart if the waterproof bag leaks.

So far so good. Pain to put on but super protective once it's on.

Although it doesn't feel as good shooting with a cover on.
