Recommend A Lens

There is so much choice out there that I'm feeling a bit swamped! I've started saving for a news lens ($300 in the pot so far!) and I love spending time looking but there just seems to be far too many to choose from. I was hoping some of you guys with experience could help out.

I have a Sony A390

Lenses I have are Tamron 70-300 F/4-5.6 and Sony 18-55 F 3.5-5.6

I love the Tamron and I shoot wild horses in the desert. The issue is that some of these wild horses have become quite used to me so they are happy to come pretty close. Hence I don't always need the full reach of a telescopic zoom.

I actually find myself in the awkward place that the very wild horses are out of reach of a 70-300 and the ones who like me are within reach, but I want the sharper images. The 70-300 does work well for some shots but I often find myself wishing I had another lens with me.

So I was looking at primes, then looking at lenses with a small range but a sharper aperture.

Basically I need a recommend for two lenses. One to shoot closer shots with sharper results and another to shoot longer at range than the 70-300mm

i recommend a teleconverter on your current lens for range, because any lens that goes beyond 300mm, but doesn't produce crap, is going to be very expensive

otherwise i recommend a 50mm, it's generally a sharp reliable lens, that doesn't cost too much, no matter who makes it

there really ren't that many new lenses that work with that camera, that go beyond 300mm (2 to be exact)

maybe someone on here could recommend an older lens, i wouldn't be able to help you there though

The only down side of tele converter is that it worsens IQ even more. And I think he isn't very happy with his 70-300 at 300mm as it is.

i made a mistake in my first search, in that i didn't include full frame lenses

A teleconverter (TC) also costs lens aperture in addition to likely IQ degradation.

A 1.4x TC costs a stop, so a f/4-5.6 lens effectively becomes a f/5.6-8 lens.

A 2x TC costs 2 stops, so the same lens effectively become a f/8-11 lens.
