Both images are 30 seconds. I’m in the suburbs so there is a lot of ambiant light but I’m planning on going out to the coast to try some long exposure and would love advice on how to get the best images.

Would need more information on what it was that you're trying to shoot here; at a guess, I'll say you're trying to shot the stars?

What camera are you using? What lens were you using, ISO/ f stop? As you said this is 30 seconds, I'll guess ISO was low <400 and that you were using higher f stop.

Biggest issue I see here is that both shots are out of focus, did you use manual focus? Also, 30 seconds is a little long if you're looking to get sharp spot stars otherwise you'll begin to see some trails...

There's a wealth of youtube videos and online material that can help you with step, recommendations etc in order to help you shoot the night sky...

One thing I would say however, is to try and include something in the frame other than just the stars as an interesting point....
