Run Way Photography.

They had a 'style week' fashion show in my area, not to long ago and I managed to get myself a pass in as a photographer. I took some pretty decent pictures but also took alot of crappy ones. I was invited to another fashion show in a couple weeks and wanted to see if anyone had any good tips for shooting 'Run Way Photography'. Besides get there early and get a good seat right in the middle.

If you have a press pass for media especially for runway modeling, you shouldn't have an issue getting a good spot at the end of the runway(Where most setup gear). Biggest thing I would worry about is how each designer is going to want their lighting. Check with the lighting tech and fellow photographers when you get there and see if they know. And depending on your skills, maybe take a different angle than the typical end of the runway.

I just did my first one this past weekend and decided to take a different approach since all the professionals were at the end of the runway and had all the lighting.

.SimO. makes some excellent points. I would look for a seat a couple of rows back from the runway and a bit past the end so that you're shooting broad to the end. That way you will get the end of the runway 'turn'.

Here are some examples of what I was suggesting. I hope it is okay to post them. I know they aren't the greatest but I am still learning. Doesn't happen much in the runway world due to the focal point being at the end of the runway, but with a T3i and making sure I didn't utilize flash to be intrusive, I did the best I could with the low light. Also check with each venue to see what the rules are with utilizing your own lighting. Some events do not allow it in certain portions of seating areas due to the VIP's to not be distracted.

Hi, I have my first runway shoot in a week. I will be using my Nikon D600 and probably rent the Nikon 7-200 f/2.8 VR II. I've read some suggestions stating ISO not to exceed 400, shutter speed 1/200 and aperture at f/4 to ensure I freeze the motion. I'm not sure if they allow flash. I will try to be in a position where I can get the runway turn as well as front shots.

I was thinking of using my 50mm f/1.8 FX for backstage. I also have a 35mm f/1.8 DX. I love quality of both lenses, but I don't think I mastered my settings for my 50mm. Also, what about WB? What about AF, should I use the 3d feature under my AF-C? Should I try to do this without flash? I only have the Younghou 560 flash on hand. I would love to have the SB-910 but I'm a student, enough said.

Are there any other suggestions anyone may have? I really appreciate all the guidance I can get.

Suggestion #1 - start your own thread rather than resurrecting a six month old one.

I can't imagine being able to shoot at ISO 400 if there's no flash permitted (very likely). Be prepared to shoot at 1600 - 2000. WB? Shoot in RAW, correct in post. Focus? I would use AF-S, with a single focusing point, placed on the face.

Ok,that's good to know. I have little experience with Photoshop and I seem to work better with Lightroom. Do you think I can get the same post-processing effects in Lightroom? Complete noob question I know. Lol
