Well I'v read all the hype about the SB-900 being notorious for the thermal cut out but went ahead and bought one and used it ALL summer and worked flawlessly! Two weeks ago I had an outdoor session(i live in VA and it was about 46 degrees) and after about 25 minutes into it, sure enough, it overheated. Kinda blew it off until I had another outdoor session this weekend (it was about 36 with 30mph winds) and yet again it was overheating like every 15 minutes. My question is why the heck is this happening even when it freezing cold and I am not even like rapid firing? I did not want to turn the thermal cut out off bc I dont want to risk burning up the flash. Any suggestions or conclusions??

The safety systems are installed in the flash for a reason, so that your 400 bucks doesn't go to waste.... If you think there is an issue with it, I would call Nikon's technical support and talk it up with them. Worst case scenario, you have to send it to them for repair, for free.

When I got my sb900, it took me a little time but i had to adjust my lighting style.
