If that is a "multi-card" style reader (it is supposed to support more than just SD-Card) then that is a Windows problem that started in 7. It is still a problem in 8 and probably in 10. You need to use a real external USB connected card reader and plug it into the computer after the computer has started up. I think the problem comes from the dates in the various software pieces. It was something about it not being able to use one part of the drive if it was "older" than some other part. Something like that. But an external USB connected card reader will work if you plug it in after the computer is already on.
