Second ever "Photo shoot"

I've shot people for a shoot once before, but I really think time was much better. I was much better prepared, and had a little more experience. True, I don't think these are professional quality yet, but since I've only been shooting for about 2 months, I think they're decent.

C&C gladly taken.

I am a couple of years in and have not produced images of this quality. I particularly like #1 and #5 for the composition and expression. The lighting in #2 looks a bit dark, but the colors work well.

I've always believed that good photography was about 50 / 50 between technical expertise and simply having a good eye. You can learn the technical stuff and, to a certain extent, you can learn to see photographically as well but it helps to have a naturally good eye. With only a couple of months experience you obviously have a good eye.

My main criticism is that she has too many clothes on.

Wow. You clearly have a very good eye as demonstrated by the way you've caught the subject at beautiful and expressive moments. I'm jelly.

Some critical thoughts:

I'd work on lighting. In some of your images, it's a bit too harsh, while in others it's slightly weak. I'm thinking of a softer flash.

The only other criticism I have is the choice of rail cars as a shoot location. I think it's very hard to do good portraiture with rail cars, because it's cliche (the dandelion of people photography), awkward (what's the reason for being in a train yard?), and distracting (all those wheels, graffiti, dark spots, etc.).

Oh okay, and I have to agree with Darrell: this pretty girl is way overdressed. :blushing: *Jaemie pervs out, yet again..*

This appears to be the same shoot as we see in the thread Alien Bee Fever above. You should talk to that guy!

You've got a different lighting look going on, and I think I like yours better. It's edgier, possibly by accident, but there we have it. Look at the photos in the other thread, look at your photos. Try to work out where his lights are, and why, and what it does to the look. You know where your light(s) were, so you can compare and contrast. What do you like about yours, and what do you like about his?

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn!

That is Tony, we actually were both using transmitters and shooting the model at the same time. We both had the same lighting, and same setup, as it was shot literally seconds one after another. The only difference was the angles at which we shot.

I like the set. . . I am not going to give a technical critique, but will say that I like how she appears to be a different person and have a variety of personalities in each photo from your set. Well done!

I'll offer what jumps out at me, the crops. I find them awkward and uncomfortable. To me the crop is an important part of the image, I'll spend a time finding just the right crop. Some of these portraits are shot in landscape, which would be fine if the spaces had some thing to offer. She's looking out of the frame on a couple and there's empty spaces behind her on a couple.

For 2 months you're doing great, don't misunderstand, I only suggest you take another look.
