Two lights of equal strength at 45's to the face will cause a flat, washed out look that is very unappealing in portraiture.

Pink, Yes it would if the lights were at equal power and 45's, but I think O|||||O was talking about just using reflectors..I could be mistaken.

I think the flash was the (overpowering) backlight..

OP. more light on the face is needed imo. I like the backlight/rimlight idea but the rest of the photo is too dark..
The second one is brighter, but the light is also pretty flat on that as well.

You got the "erose inspired" blank stare down pretty well. Kudos.

Thanks Rez and pink. Will definatly move it around. Just figured out the commander mode so that was fun. More to come and hopefully better.
