There's a big article about that in this month's popular science. They use jet skis to tow the surfers up to speed so they can even catch those huge waves. I think it's billabong that's sponsoring several riders to fly around the world trying to find a HUNDRED foot wave and surf it...even though if they wipe out it's almost certain death. :shock:
