I decided I think I am going to make the DSLR move with all the sales going on....here's what I came up with:
Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR Kit w/ EF-S/18-55 IS II (went 2Ti as I heard from more than one source the difference to the 3Ti is not worth it)

Depends on what you plan on doing, if you don't plan on long days out that you might keep the 50 dollars for the extra battery in your pocket

You don't need a UV filter. We used those back in the film days, but it doesn't do anything for you on a digital camera other than put a $20 window in front of your lens.

Thanks for the feedback!...as far as the battery....I could definitely wait on that for a while..I do have a full day workshop I'm taking in August so I'll need an extra battery by then but not immediately. With the UV filter one reason I was thinking about that is some people say it's good for protecting your lenses from scratches, etc. Is that protection even necessary or is there something else better/cheaper for that purpose????

Use the sun shade/lens hood for protection if the lens comes with one.

I would add a tripod to that list. :thumbup:

My opinion is to use a hood when you're shooting with it, and a lens cap when you're not.

The filter, especially cheap filters like a $22 one, often introduce artifacts that resemble very faint Newton Rings under close examination at some apertures. I had my doubts about that, having used them for years on all my lenses, but a bit of testing showed me otherwise, and I stopped using them altogether on the same day that I confirmed it's true.

It's not like they show up as noticeable rainbow colored rings on the photos, but they're there nonetheless, slightly degrading my images for no real benefit in trade. Some of my lenses are fairly expensive, up to $1400 or so, and it didn't make sense to me to block the view of $1400 worth of very precisely ground and aligned, high quality, optical lenses with $20-$50 worth of cheap glass that does nothing for me.

Thanks...actually, I forgot to mention I already own a tripod...got that for my camcorder. As far as the warranty....I"m thinking squaretrade...I use them for my phone and tablet and they have good prices..their 3 year warranty is roughly $100 . The prices are on-line deals..that's why I'm thinking of jumping now rather than waiting.

Get the extra battery, It's not about being able to shoot all day, It's about "Crap I forgot to charge my battery last night and I am in the most amazing shoot and my battery just died"

I have the t2i and I found batteries on amazon for CHEAP! I bought 4 extra batteries (im a little ocd and like to keep stock of stuff lol). 4 battereies and shipping $23!

Thanks for the tip on cheap batteries...I'll have to get some next time I order from amazon! Oh, one thing...I have to check but the warranty might be cheaper in this particular case from the vendor rather than squaretrade...I'll have to check what they cover as most of the time squaretrade is much cheaper.

Buy the UV filter. They do a lot more for protection than a hood will offer, use the hood too though. The UV filters absorb shock if you drop your lens and can prevent the glass in your lens from breaking. Hoods won't do that. Other stuff I would say is an extra memory card. Nothing is worse than showing up for a photo shoot and realizing you left the card in the card reader at home. Keep the extra stashed in you camera bag. I would also suggest getting a 50mm f/1.8 lens for portraits and low light situations.

And those cheap batteries are hit and miss. They usually don't hold re-charge value for very long so they go bad faster. Some have even been known to cause problems with the camera.

Yea they were cheap but it's literally the exact same battery that came with the camera. I've charged and recharged and have had no problem with them at all

Update: I decided this morning to go to a local store as they'ed match the on-line price and I could actually see the thing before I bought it. Anyway, when I tried the T2i and the equivalent Nikon (3100) the Nikon just felt better in my tiny hands (the Nikon body is smaller.) I also liked the Nikon screen interface. The prices for what I got were comparable (did go for the second lens 55-200 which was $100 off.) I should add the Assistant Manager who was helping me is a Nikon shooter but it was the size and interface that let me to take the decision I did. I'm going to do the "unboxing" and then start taking some pix!
