Short-eared owls

Awesome set! We were getting a short eared owl down here for a little while. The word would get out and suddenly there were 20 other photographers down at the park. Yeesh. The owl stopped coming and I think it was because of the crowd.

Fantastic set of images!

Thanks guys.

@MitchP if you care to tell me where down here is I could relate since I'm down in SE Texas. :chuncky:

The shorties have been very cooperative this year. Up here in the Great White North, they have shown up in numbers most of us haven't seen before. There's an area, about a mile square, that I've been told there are 18 pairs of short eared owls. That's the good news. The bad news, it seems like they only come out (in numbers) with bright sun, and little to no wind. We've had those conditions twice in the last month.
BTW, nice shots.

Excellent images Bill

Thanks for the comments.

Dave, we have pretty good numbers this year as well and like up there, wind is a big factor. Ours are evening flyers which makes for good light if no or few clouds. It has become a circus where I go and that makes the owls stay further out.

The first time I went to this"new" spot, I took 3600 photos in about an hour. At one time I had 5 owls circling me. At this time of year, the sun is so low in the sky it's like shooting during the golden hour for most of the day.
On my forth time there, I finally got one standing on a fence post. All the other times, all I got were flight shots.
Some of the other owls are just starting to pick out their nesting areas. I think that's were I'll spend most of time in January, thieving to find them.
