Should i watermark all images I put on fb

next time a person asks draw like a big dildo or something in their mouth in the picture and then write this is what happens when someone complains about image quality... That would be called taking the mature route or high road...

The mature route? Did you mean "the mature route?"
Comic sans... gotcha!

Absolutely, put a copyright statement on any photos you post on Facebook.
That might stop some of the people that just want a cool background for their desktop, or maybe some people that want a free 4x6 print, but it doesn't stop this:

you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.

Facebook
Section 2, paragraph 1.

And my wife wonders why I give her **** every time she posts pictures on Facebook...

I get what you're saying, but for most people the point of photography is to be able to show off their images, not stash them away to remain unseen unless they are paid for.

There is a very big difference, IMO, between showing off images and granting a large 'corporate entity' a free license to use your images in any way they see fit, without compensation. There are plenty of places to show off your work without giving your rights away at the same time.

I especially liked that last part - the license ends when you delete the work, unless someone else has reposted it without deleting it. Essentially, your intellectual property (that is what they are referring to when they say "IP") is not under your control if you post it on Facebook.

We get new threads weekly asking about stock and micro-stock. Facebook is using your images in the same way as if you uploaded them to a micro-stock agency, except you don't get paid.

And you agree to it by clicking the "I agree" button without actually reading what it is you are agreeing to.

Oh yeah - and they can transfer that license to anybody they want.

But Josh is a paranoid mother.......... with two many guns. Hah.:

Maybe (probably on the guns part, lol), but still - you can't deny that I am right.

By posting photos on Facebook, you are granting them a license to do whatever they want with them, for free. Granted, the majority of the photos posted there will probably never get 'used' by them - but how would you feel if your photo was used in a multi-million dollar ad campaign and you didn't even get one cent for it...?

I understand that absolutely but I think the risk of that vs the gain of word of mouth advertising is worth it for myself personally at this point. I was mostly kidding about the paranoid part.

No I wasn't

No I wasn't

...It's OK. ;)

Maybe I am... I only let my wife post cell phone shots on FB, lol. Just in case. She thinks I'm crazy. She doesn't really understand how the royalty free world and licensing works...

Facebook is garbage!
Clearly...

I only opened an account there to placate my family. I rarely visit...

They seem happy that I have a profile, and I just delete all the BS e-mails I get because of it. Everyone is happy, lol.

Josh....stop being such a party pooper!! lol

I don't watermark but a few of mine. I feel like it's a waste of time, if they want to take my work and call it their own...well, something will catch up to them one day. And they look like crap if they're copied from fb and printed anyways. But, I've posted images from a shoot before on fb before I was even paid, and the girl never paid me and I'm sure copied the images. Now I obvious gather my earnings before posting anything. You shoot and you learn...:er:

Josh....stop being such a party pooper!! lol
Just stating the facts, lol.

Anything you have posted there can be used for pretty much any purpose, and you already agreed to it.

Even if you delete it, they still have the right to use it if anybody else has reposted it. And - if it was worthy of their use, whatever that might be, surely there is at least one person that has reposted it. What would stop them from creating a profile and reposting all the shots they like - just in case the creator decides to delete them...?

What you have to ask yourself any time you post photos on Facebook is - is this good enough for commercial use, and do I care if it is used for that purpose without compensation? If you answer yes to either question, you would be better off not posting it.

You can make jokes about it if it makes you feel better, but it doesn't change the fact that you are giving them carte blanche usage of your images...
