Photos have always been edited.

Absolutely. I did much the same thing in a darkroom years ago, I just didn't have the capabilities I have now with digital photography and it took a lot longer.

Agree with all replies - if you shoot raw, you really do not have a choice IMHO. Curious why you would ask.

Enhancing, editing or processing?
My answer to all 3 is yes. They are different art forms though. Processing is a necessary step. It's the process of developing the raw image or putting YOUR look on the jpeg. It's not altering the image. That kind of work is capable of being done in the raw processor. No pixel editing involved.

Enhancing-sure. It is some people's "LOOK." It's their art. I don't enhance a lot, but when it is done well I love enhanced images and the ones I do enhance make me wish I had more time to do that kind of work. It does take some pixel altering combined with developing.

Editing the image to be something it's not? Sure again. It's art. It's someone's art besides mine most of the time, but I definitely have a GREAT appreciation for it. It requires talent with the camera AND talent in the editing program.

Should YOU? It's up to you what your art is.
Should I? I am more a minimalist/purest type of photographer most of the time. I drool and wish I had more skill with the digital art side of it!!! While I have a little bit of down time I think I'll go work on some old images and some editing them into new art. It's a good challenge I wish I had more time for. Thanks for the spark of what may be!

No its not. A empty memory card is the blank canvas. A raw file is like oil paint that you con manipulate a bit more then you could acrylic.

Yes, absolutely...that's part of it. Someone good at Photoshop or Lightroom can get the most out of the image without altering what it is...ie. make it pop off the screen. I do believe unless one is going for a particular artistic result the subject should look how it does in RL.
