shutter actuations?

I see sometimes that people list how many shutter actuations their camera has. How can I find this info on my Nikon D40? Thanks!

I'm not sure how accurate this will be, someone else will give more info, but when you take a picture, look at the sequence number. It always counts actuations but my 50D only shows 4 digits. After the 9999th image I don't know what it'll do.

My D90 says DSC_0901. I know Ive shot more than 900 images. I have no idea..but 10,901 sounds more accurate. Id like to know also!

Exiftool is a cool utility. However, shuttercount doesn't seem to be the relevant name as stated by that linked page, at least for my camera (D300). In my case, there's something called "image number" that seems to be it.
