Not really necessary. I have shot in 40 below zero without a problem.

it says on the page blurb that is can be used like that - it certainly would be a good barrier between the lens and fingers- and in the photo that visable section of the lens is a clear seethrough section - so its completly covered from rain as well

I never really thought much about the noise until I got my canonet rangefinder, now my Nikons sound really loud to me.
