Sigma Drops Bombshell, Announces a 18-35mm f/1.8 Lens


I am excited, yet sounds to good to be true. Anyone hear anything new or have any insight of what to expect?

I expect a warm color rendering; one that cannot ever completely be eliminated, no matter how much white balancing and tinkering one does with the images.

Otherwise, that's a nice lens, and I think it definitely puts the big boys on notice.

Now, if they make one for a full frame, they'll have my undivided attention...

I don't understand why they wouldn't go for full frame to start because you'd be able to use it on a cropped sensor.

Anyone have any insight on why they would do that to us?

I would imagine it has something to do with street price, but I'm just guessin'...

One thing that's good to know; by reading the comments over there it's another sure sign the world will not soon run out of stupid people.

Regarding the lens, it sounds interesting, but it's gonna be gigantic, even if it is crop only. It's a shame it isn't full frame though, that could be a concert shooter's dream.

My guess is that the reduced circle of coverage made it easier to design a FAST, f/1.8, 2x wide-angle zoom lens that is reasonably easy to make, and which can be sold at a reasonable price. APS-C sized cameras must outnumber full-frame bodies by 100 to 1, I would guess, or pretty close to that ratio. So, the market is simply much,much larger for a lens that is optimized for APS-C.

Yes, the smaller the image circle, the easier it is to design practical fast zoom lenses. Examples are the old Angenieux 16-44 f/1.1 and 9.5-57 f/1.6 which only cover 16 mm. There are a couple of Fujinon lenses that are designed to cover 24 mm x 13.5 mm (Super 35, roughly APS-C) which are similar in speed to the Sigma - they are T2.0 lenses, so likely to be around f/1.8. One is 18-85 and the other is 14.5-45. At $90,000 and $100,000, they are both just very slightly more expensive than the Sigma.

There is probably a good reason why Canon and Nikon don't make one
