sizing issue

I use Light Room Beta and iphoto for my processing and I always keep my images in iphoto. Well when I go to resize a photo, I pull it from iphoto out onto my desk top and then open it in "Preview", I then click "Image" and then "resize" which opens a box with my photo size and an option to resize it. Well whenever I choose a size, the inches always changes to somewhere around Width: 1.66 inches and Height: 2.5 inches with a resolution of 240 ppi. Is my res and size different because of the software I'm using? And if so, how can I avoid it from doing so?

I just started using LR Beta so I'm thinking that might be my issue because all the photos I don't process in LR Beta come out fine.

Not sure what you're asking here but resolution and size is proportional to pixel width. So 2.5inches at 240ppi means that the image is 600pixels high? If you are not resampling the image then increasing the resolution say to 300ppi means the height is reduced to 2inches.
