Just a simple portrait to put on my website's About page. My face is a bit OOF I believe, but I'm not too nervous about it because the image is going to be resized for about 300x450. I was just curious if this is adequate enough for its purpose?

Looks good enough to me. There is a small shadow in the upper right corner (edge of paper?) that you should clone out, but other than that, it looks fine.

Ah. I see the shadow. I shot it with a very shoddy white backdrop so I had to dodge it to hell pretty much. Here's another:

Just a somewhat generic question, but why do people use a white background instead of green/blue screen?

Because having a slightly grey spot in the corner like on my photo is much less noticeable than a weird green or blue blotch.

In my opinion it's just easier and you don't have to be as precise. I've found that when I use a green or blue screen and I cut the subject out of it it looks very rigid especially when hair is involved. I find it easier to feather the edges better with a white background.

Put them on a camera, or a big gun or something.

The hands in the pockets don't really bother me, and I don't think they make you look dorky - but I agree that something might be better than nothing...
