don't suppose you know anyone you can borrow kit off? Even a local store which you might be able to loan a flash off?
Failing that you could try getting them to lower the chandelier (its a ball there is always one of those ) if you position yourself in front of it it might shed some light on your subjects

This is why pros have quantities of the same equipment. Heck, every time I think about selling off some of my backup equipment, I see a story like this to remind me why I have it.

Well, I'm not a pro, and I don't claim to be.

It was a fundraiser for the domestic violence shelter I work at. I didn't want to do it, but I got roped into it. I ended up getting the flash working, but the ceiling was too high for me to bounce it. I am not happy with the pictures at all, but I doubt there will be many complaints from the attendees. My standards tend to be much MUCH higher than that of non-photogs.

I have my photoshoppin' work cut out for me today.
