Lens choices. My birthday is next month and I've been saving for something nice

Current gear is basic

16-85 VRII 3.5-5.6
70-300 VRII 4.5-5.6
50 AF 1.8

I shoot everything. Well everything that I find interesting. Archetecture, Portrait, landscape.

I was thinking the Nikkor 105vr micro but then all this talk of 70-200 VRII 2.8 made me drool but I don't know if my abilities can justify the cost?

Any suggestions?

I don't ever plan, nor do I have a real desire to be a proffesional portrait photgrapher but I enjoy the art and will move from the 300s to a full frame some where down the line.

Well you have a good start on lenses. Since you do Architecture & Landscapes what do you think about ultra-wide like a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 or even the Sigma 10-20 ain't too shabby.

Budget? 105mm micro and 70-200mm VRII are priced very differently and serve very different purposes. We need more info.

I have both the 105mm and the 70-200mm VRI. I use both and use quite often, but they do have different purposes. Both can be used for portraiture. Difficult to shoot wildlife with the 105mm, difficult to shoot macro with the 70-200mm.

For versatility, the 70-200mm gets the nod, but it is a honker of a lens. It is also a 77mm filter thread.

Budget...realistically, unless I can find a good used 70-200vr at a steal, it's out of my reach and I'm really ok with the 70-300vr for the time being.


A ultra-wide isn't a bad idea...

Another thought...serious macro work often requires its own complement of dedicated gear...lighting, focusing rails, etc. If you want to get a macro lens, both sigma and tamron have some nice, affordable offerings in similar focal lengths. Not sure your really need vr on a macro lens anyway. This could leave some moolah available for a fast tele-zoom down the road (or the aforementioned ancillary macro gear).
