Hi guys,

My family has an old portrait of my great great grandfather. (1874-1916) He was a farmer and pretty poor, so this is the only picture of him. This photo is colored. To me it looks painted, but my grandmaw said that she thinks back then they would take a picture and then paint the color in..but i cannot find any photos like this. Is this just a painting? what year could it be from? is it a photo that someone painted over? please help. Its in an old frame so i took a picture of the picture.

thanks!

That is a photograph which has been colorized. In the old days before color film talented artists would color black and white prints with dyes.

Did you check the EXIF data?

No, I don't think you'll be able to know exactly what the original looks like. Unless it's scannable and you can convert it to grayscale.

What is EXIF?

In this instance, it's a joke.

EXIF data is metadata that's embedded in a digital image file. It normally contains exposure info, camera make and model, lens used, etc. However, there's obviously no EXIF data for a film photo.

Something like this?
