Something different...

I got PSE10 for Christmas and I've been playing around.. This was done using an option called the Orton effect. Yes, there is supposed to be noise and blur. I kind of like it..It's different.

Beautiful cat and an interesting exposure. A little hot in the eyes.

It's funny. All these years I've gone to great lengths to insure my photographs are sharply in focus somewhere and managed the ASA / ISO to keep grain / noise down. And the whole time people have been coming up with ways of putting back what I try to hard to get rid of. Hot developing film to bring the grain out and stretching cloth over the enlarger lens to get softness. And now there are digital filters to do the same thing. I've never understood the draw personally. To each their own though.

I think you missed the focus by quite a bit. Reading your EXIF it shows that you used F1.8 at that aperture the depth of field is razor thin. If you had gotten the eyes 100% in focus it might have been OK but when you miss, even by a very slight amount it shows.

The other thing that is bugging me is, Why so much grain? You shot it at ISO 100. Did you ad grain in post? I really don't think it adds to this shot.

This was a picture I took right after I got my 50mm lens and I was shooting everything at 1.8..LOL!! I used an option in Photoshop Elements 10 called the Orton effect, so it supposed to have a lot of noise and blur.

TamiAz, if you are interested in the origin of the Orton effect, you might take a look at this one: Michael Orton Photography - Orton Effect . While the effect is meant to produce a certain amount of blur, I do not believe that it was originally intended to produce noise as it originated in the days of 35mm film. The image of your cat might be nice, but don't forget, it was originally intended to be used in landscape photography. Not sure I am crazy about "ortonized" cats, but then that is just me, and if you like it, then that is really what counts. I would encourage you to try it with one of your landscape images and share the results with us.

Technically speaking, it's soft and lack of detail due to overexposure in the eyes, the background colour and noise are distracting and the composition is pretty flat and boring. Artistically speaking, it's a picture of a cat. Pictures of cats are not different... sorry.

I'm not feeling the effect, sorry to say. I feel like nothing is in focus, but the blur doesn't add anything that makes me feel anything about the photo. And if the original photo is sort of out of focus, then I would agree with flameshots's post, and as well, the post just above me by fokker. Sorry, but I hope this helps sort of.
