Sorry Brain, my mind doesn't always work in a linear fashion. What I meant by "exclusive" is the method I use to edit/process a raw image. Let me clarify.

My process goes like this: first, I put the raw file in Adobe's Lightroom (ver. 6.9 - standalone). Now LR has sharpening & noise reduction capabilities but I have found them a little limited in the 6.9 version and I'm not sure if later versions are more effective since ver. 6.9 is all I have access to. Second, if the image has additional noise due to high ISO or other reasons, I take the finished LR file, in .jpeg format, and put it in Neat Image version 8. This is the software I use because over the years I have developed my own technique/method within the software. Other people have used other noise reduction software plateforms successfully - I am not endorsing Neat Image as the only or best software. But sometimes, if the .jpeg image file is small the NR software will not be very effective but counter productive. In other words, reducing more noise will "overprocess" the image and make it "smooth" in places. And thirdly/finally, I put the second .jpeg image file saved separately from the NR software into Gimp to apply a copyright icon and sometimes apply a little more adjustment to brightness & contrast in order to add a little more "gloss" to the image. Other folks use Adobe's Photoshop - I don't have access to any of Adobe's earlier standalone versions so I use Gimp. This final step depends on each independent image of coarse, depending on my individual taste. I'm not endorsing this edting/processing method, it just works for me. I hope this clarifies.

Thanks for your input Scott - and I have admired your photos! My belief is, the better the camera settings are (and the person behind the camera), the less editing/processing needs to be done. I haven't quite gotten there yet.

They just happened to be lined up while coming up the hill as they were waiting for me to leave. I had just put out some cracked corn for them to eat. The welfare terminology/wording happened to pop into my head as I was processing the image. They sort of reminded me of folks back in the late 1920's standing in line outside of soup kitchens, waiting to get something to eat. I hope this wasn't offensive to anyone - if it was I apologize.

I shot this image with a Nikon D500 through a Sigma 150-600mm lens.

BTW - Sharon. I like your new avatar. Was this little guy a christmas gift?

I did a local comparison of just using LR vs. Topaz Denoise AI in some of my worst images and the differences were significant.

I'll try to remember to post these results here, but to completely smooth/eliminate high ISO noise with LR, it means to utterly destroy all detail in your image. Topaz is able to remove high ISO noise but still retain all the fine detail.


I'll have to see if I can compare Topaz Denoise to Neat Image...

Topaz Denoise is excellent and so easy to use. Actually love all my Topaz plug ins. They’re the only things I miss when I edit on my iPad. If I need denoise I have to use my pc.
