Stepping into DSLR, need some advice

Just found this place and have a few questions.

I'm no photographer, but would like a hobby that I could enjoy. I do enjoy taking many pics with my Point and Shoot, but want to go further.

I'm thinking of starting out with a
Nikon D90
Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR

My thoughts for this setup...
Nikon D90 has most of the adjustments of the higher end cameras that I can learn on.
The 18-55mm, while not fast, should give me some good practice at various ranges and maybe make me better at taking pics as the glass is slow.

I'm not sure if I said that correctly or not.

Right now, my budget is a thousand'ish for a camera and one lens.

What are your guys thoughts?

Also, how long do you think the D90 will be current for? Wondering how quickly I'll be obsolete. Not an issue, just curious.

While that is certainly a good option for you, I'd like to throw out a recommendation for a D90 + Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 HSM Macro

I think that combo is much better for just a little more money.
