Edit: is it just me or does the leveling feel weird? Why do I not notice this till I've posted it

It feels weird because of the angle of the window frame. The scenery beyond that is level, but you didn't shoot through the window straight on, so the eye isn't sure what's level - the dark heavy line of the horizontal frame or the actual buildings beyond it. Plus, you've got the vertical line of the frame that looks slightly slanted against the tall vertical lines of the Empire State Building.

Perhaps just a quick perspective correction would take care of it.

Yeah I agree, I'm going to pull this one and try messing with the perspective. If I remember correctly, this window was actually tilted toward the inside of the building at the top. It's the same window in this shot:

The buildings in the background look tilted to me even when I cover the window frame. I'd put a grid on it to see.

I like the gritty, (I know overused), view. The window frame is obviously angled. Using the edge of my computer screen as a plumb line the building on the far right has a very slight tilt to the left, HOTEL has a very slight tilt to the left, the steel & glass building has a very slight tilt to the right (weird huh), the lower brick building behind HOTEL has a slight tilt to the right and the Empire State Building is plumb.

Is it possible that the window was tilted open a bit and causing some pincushion distortion?
A bit of correction of lens correction seems to have made a difference.

The second one is a real triumph, AFAIC.

Nothing, really. Just way too much emphasis on micro-adjusting level to within one or two one-hundredths of a degree these days, and on micro-managing away all the imperfections of real lenses (distortion removal, chromatic aberration removal, elimination of light fall off,etc)...simply because "we can" in Photoshop. It's part of the loss of photography's heritage, as digital imaging and computer processing of "files" supplants taking pictures that have even the slightest "imperfections".

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and its expression.
It is only annoying when that opinion is laid out as if it is received wisdom from on high.
My opinion is that, if the distortion is disconcerting and can be fixed, I would correct it as much as possible and remove the distraction.
There is nothing sacred about pictures and no need to worship the past.
