Well, I hate to throw a monkey wrench into the machine, but I have the Sigma 18-50 EX DG HSM II f/2.8.

I wouldn't trade it for anything. Well, actually, there's a LOT I would trade it for, but not a Tamron or Nikon in the same range. It performs quite nicely.

Until Lucky, I thought I was the only one who'd vote for the Sigma. I have it and absolutely love it. I think you'll be happy either way. Kinda like Nikon vs. Camera bodies. Now, with the 3rd party lenses, from what I've heard they don't have quite the QC that Nikon has so you have a little better chance at getting a bad copy. Then you won't be happy. However, if you get a good copy (which you probably will), what a step up from the kit lens.

Another vote for the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 HSM Macro. Make sure you get that version, it's significantly better than the previous versions it replaced. If Jerry was still around, he'd tell you.

yeah, with third party there is a huge advantage in buying new. They have warranties so that if you get a soft copy just send it back. Eventually you will get a great copy for a ton less than a Canon/Nikon
