"Proper" exposure in these instances can be tricky. I remember during the OJ Simpson trial, both Time and Newsweek put the same or a similar image on their covers at around the same time, and in one of them, his skin tone appeared considerably darker than in reality. Needless to say, it caused quite a stir, particularly in the context of a criminal trial.

This is absolutely a valid question. In situations where i've shot people with darker complexion, i've ended up using fill flash alot. If you expose for the skin, the background blows out.

What I found is that with white folks, shape is determined by shadows. On black folk, shape is determined by highlights.
