Suggestions for padded camera sack

Hello all, its been a while.

I have recently started mountain biking and wow has it brought me to see some beautiful things and go places I normally wouldn't of been able to access. I highly suggest you try it if you are looking to try something new.

My problem is how to store my camera while on my biking trips. These are currently 10-30 mile trips so I have to have a bunch of tools and supply's that I carry in a hydration backpack. Its not padded or protected and currently I have been risking just putting my D7100 and 70-300 in a waterproof sack that has no padding. My backpack is an Ospery Manta 36 which has plenty of room for the camera but trying to find a protective vessel for the camera and 70-300 lens has been troublesome.

I am envisioning some sort of sack that is padded that I slide the camera and lens into but maybe you all have a better idea? I pretty much need what ever it is to be inside the hydration pack as my balance or mobility on the bike will be affected if its not.

I'm guessing this will be just a bit larger than you need, but I just recently won a LowePro Nova 17L bag (yay, LowePro!), and one of its interesting features is that the entire padded section lifts out. I haven't completed a "real" review yet, but I've got some notes & photos at the link below that should explain what I'm talking about:

If that idea appeals to you, there are all sorts of alternatives to this, too -- here's an Ape Case padded insert that had been in my wish list before I won the bag from LowePro. I'd considered doing something like this for backpacking, as this seemed a whole lot more flexible than buying a series of dedicated photo bags that don't really meet my other backpacking needs. In any event, I think you get the idea.

Mountain Biking riding is an excellent way of seeing places as well as great exercise.

Anyhow, I generally only ride about 10-13 miles and use a small camera bag and camelpak for hydration. But it sounds like you could really use a Lowepro Sport 200. It's a small backpack with a dedicated side pocket for cameras, storage for gear, and a pocket for a hydration bladder.

Wow first two posts and some great suggestions.

lambertpix: Yeah that Lowepro will be a bit too big for the bag but I could totally use those inserts which are fully enclose and put them in the bag. That a definite possibility.

Tailgunner: Now that is an option, its absolutely perfect for what I am looking for. Would be annoying transferring equipment back and forth for between my current bag and that one depending on the situation but man that's exactly what I need.
