Sunpak 522

I have a chance to get a sunpak 522 and I am wondering what I will need to use this off camera with my D40. I have looked around and think I need a hot shoe to PC adapter and then plug that into the flash? And also I know that there may be a voltage problem, how can I figure that part out? thanks for your help, I have searched around on google and a little on strobist but have not found what I am looking for.

Do you want to use it off camera with a cord or wirelessly? If you only want to use a cord, you will need a hot shoe to PC adapter and then the other end of the cord will have to attach to the flash...you would have to check what type of connection.

You could do it wirelessly with a few different products. I have THIS...it's a cheap product that can be found on E-bay...but it does work, most of the time.

Better quality options would be Elinchrome SkyPorts or Pocket Wizards.

THIS page gave a few different voltages for that flash...but it seems that 190v is the safe number to use. I'm not sure what the safe rating is for the D40, so you would have to look that up.

Ok thanks. I think that will want to use it wirelessly and have heard of those ebay triggers and will do it that way. and I researched it and found the max for a D40 is 250 so it should work, right?

If your D40 is rated at 250v, then you would be OK to use it on camera.

When you use it wirelessly...there is no way for the voltage to get back to the camera...so you wouldn't have to worry about it anyway.

I'm not sure what the radio trigger reciever is rated at...but it should be OK.
