I think the it'd work better in landscape rather than portrait. The composition is a bit off to me too, although I do like the bird. I would read more on here and post less photos for a while

Agree with the comment above about the landscape vs portrait framing.

However, this is the first picture that you've posted that has interesting subject and lighting so I think that's an improvement. this is the first picture you've posted that I thought to myself "Hmm, let me have a closer look."

You should go back to this place at sunset or sunrise and see if you can get any other interesting shots. Look for pictures with interesting/dynamic lighting.

Overall, it's not bad, but in trying to concentrate on the bird, you have also captured a human figure which is distracting.

I'd say keep up the good work!

Really? Come on; there's NO better way to learn than to have someone critique your own work! I could read a thousand critique posts on portraiture, but because it's not my shot, and not done the way I would, I'm not going to take nearly as much away from it as if I were being told about my own image.

OP: This isn't a bad capture at all. I like the fact that you've captured the bird, but I would suggest removing the person frame left. In this case, because the interest is vertical (that is the sky, the water and the wharf), I think a portrait orientation was perfectly appropriate. I would suggest however that you could improve the image by pulling it back into the pixel room and brightening the lower half somewhat. Remember that the eye is naturally drawn to bright objects, so while we're pulled to the sun & bird, because the rest is so dark, most viewers aren't really going to notice it. This is an ideal situation for using a graduated ND filter; this would have enhanced you sky, reduced the blown area of the sun, and given you 1-3 stops (or more if you wanted) of brightness at the bottom.

I only say that because the entire "new posts" feed was threads he had started

you dont have alot of time to take shots as the sun is going down and im not one to fake a shot by removing stuff the image is what i got with no work done on it but yes i 100% agree it would be better without the guy also i was trying to get the water, wharf, sky sun and a bird in front of the sun for color it could be changed no problem. Fair enough, but no harm in being a keener.

jsecordphoto, you should explain your statement right away, I was preparing myself to tell you something meany. After you explained it's completely different story :)

I like the shot very much..
The colors, the sky, the bird and the sea/wharf.
I think your orientantion suits the image and regarding the person..ok, it is not ideal he is there, but does not destroy the picture, the photo remains good for my eyes. Well done
